Supporting documentation requirements

All applicants are required to provide officially certified hardcopies of academic transcripts for all prior studies not completed at the University of Melbourne, along with proof of degree completion (where claimed) for each previous qualification.

  • While it is possible to upload electronic copies of your transcripts during the online application process, you must also mail us officially certified copies of all academic documents by post before an offer can be made. Please ensure all submitted documents clearly identify the applicant’s name, application ID Number, and course applied for.
  • LOCAL APPLICANTS should post or deliver documents to:

    Admissions Office - Certified Documents
    (Application ID number: ********)
Graduate School of Humanities and Social Sciences (GSHSS)
Old Arts Building, The University of Melbourne, Victoria 3010.

  • INTERNATIONAL APPLICANTS should post or deliver documents direct to:

    International Admissions, International Centre,
The University of Melbourne, Victoria 3010 Australia.

  • If you are currently studying at the University of Melbourne, or have studied here in the past, the GSHSS admissions staff will have access your University of Melbourne academic records, so we do not need you to provide us with copies of your University of Melbourne transcripts.
  • If you are studying outside the University of Melbourne in the current semester, you are required to provide us with an official record/transcript of your current course results to date, either as an uploaded electronic file during your online application or via post. You will need to provide GSHSS with an officially certified hardcopy of your final transcript, and proof of degree completion, as soon as these are available.
  • If you would like relevant professional experience (where relevant to a particular Masters program) to be taken into account during assessment of your application, you will also need to provide a CV detailing the relevant work experience, along with the contact details of at least two professional referees. Professional reference letters may also be included.
  • If any of your documentation is in a language other than English, an official certified English translation must also be provided.
  • Your academic results documentation should also include an official key to the meaning of the grades for each institution.

Please note that in addition to course entry requirements, all applicants must also establish they meet the English Language requirements of the University of Melbourne.

If you have read the requirements and are eligible to apply for the GSHSS Graduate Access Melbourne scheme, your GSHSS Graduate Access Melbourne application form (340kb pdf) needs to be uploaded during your online course application, along with supporting documents, or sent afterwards to GSHSS Admission by the published closing date for your intake.

Additional documents that may be required

  • Applicants for the Executive Master of Arts (EMA) are required to submit a statement of intent as part of their application (500 words maximum). In particular, the GSHSS Selection Committee would like to know what has motivated you to undertake the EMA course.
  • Applicants for the Master of Creative Writing, Publishing and Editing are required to submit a 3000 word creative writing folio with their application.
  • Applicants for the Master of Cultural Materials Conservation should note that completion of study equivalent to 25 points of University-level chemistry is normally required as background for a large proportion of subjects in the course. If you do not have any chemistry background, the Centre for Cultural Materials Conservation conducts a Chemistry Bridging Course each year in February, which you are strongly advised to undertake prior to commencing your course. Applicants may also enhance their application through providing evidence of manual dexterity, either through a folio presentation or by reference, and submitting the results of a colour vision test with their application.
  • Applicants for the Master of Applied Linguistics need to provide a CV with their application, detailing their relevant professional experience.
  • Applicants who hold an Honours degree relevant to their Masters application should provide details of their thesis topic and Honours coursework subjects if this information does not appear on their academic transcript.
  • Applicants whose previous qualifications were undertaken more than 10 years ago should also provide a CV with their application.
  • Applicants may also wish to submit a personal statement highlighting key aspects of their application and interest in the course (optional).
