Enjoy the flexibility to pursue an area of humanities and social sciences that interests you.You'll write a thesis to apply the specialist knowledge you’ve learnt and make an independent contribution to existing scholarship in the discipline.

The University of Melbourne provides research students with support including workshops, seminars and coursework leadership programs. You'll cultivate high level research and writing skills, and study coursework elements that will enhance your research training experience.

A Master of Arts is usually undertaken over 18 months (full-time) or three-years (part time). Successful completion of this degree can act as a pathway to the Doctor of Philosophy degree.

Please note: The Graduate School of Humanities and Social Sciences will only accept applications for Graduate Research study to commence in Semester 1. No midyear intake for this course is offered. Students are also required to commence the degree by the first week of Semester 1.

You will have the opportunity to

  • Produce a 30,000-word thesis on a research topic you are passionate about.
  • Demonstrate your ability to present and argue a coherent hypothesis on your chosen issue in developmental studies, supported by research and analysis.
  • Demonstrate your aptitude for original research at a higher degree level in the future.
