Frequently asked questions about the Executive Master of Arts (EMA)

Do I need a Grade Point Average (GPA) in my undergraduate degree to be eligible to apply?

The selection panel will consider an applicant's Grade Point Average in their undergraduate degree, as well as their personal statement. A minimum Grade Point Average has not been determined.

Can I study subjects offered by other faculties in the discipline electives?

No. Students are required to choose from the list of discipline electives offered as part of the EMA, which also includes up to 25 points of language study.

How many units of language can I take? Can I study language in all six of the discipline electives? What level can I study language at?

Up to 25 points of language study is permitted in the Executive Master of Arts. Students may enrol at beginners, intermediate or advanced level, depending on their language ability. The following languages are available:


What if I have not studied in the Humanities or Social Sciences before? Will the discipline electives be difficult? Are their particular subjects I should take?

The discipline subjects available in the Executive Master of Arts assume the skills acquired with the completion of an undergraduate degree and ability to study and research at an advanced graduate level. However, they do not assume prior knowledge in the Humanities or Social Sciences. Executive Master of Arts students are free to choose elective subjects to suit their interest and passion.

I'm a Certified Public Accountant (CPA). Can I get credit for the budgeting and finance core subject in the Executive Master of Arts as I already have this knowledge?

Students in the Executive Master of Arts must complete all six compulsory subjects regardless of their background knowledge.

How will the internship placement be arranged, and what kinds of organisations will be involved?

The internship placements are being developed in consultation with industry partners to ensure that the student projects are manageable and appropriate, and complement the curriculum. The placements will be jointly supervised by a representative from the industry partner and an academic at the Graduate School of Humanities Social Sciences to ensure that students are provided with the guidance and direction needed to successfully complete the internship. Internship opportunities are available across a range of sectors including private and public institutions and not-for-profit organisations.

Can I undertake the Executive Master of Arts internship with my current employer?

The internship involves the completion of a major project within an organisation, and some students may be permitted to complete the internship with their current employer, with permission from the course coordinator.

Can I go on Exchange while studying the Executive Master of Arts?

Due to the intensive nature of the program, exchange is not available.

Can I take the Executive Master of Arts internship overseas?

Yes, the internship can be taken overseas.

What is the difference between the Executive Master of Arts and other Masters by Coursework programs?

The Executive Master of Arts offers broad based skills for career opportunities across a range of professional destinations, while other Masters by Coursework programs are focused on known and defined professional destinations.
