Top-up Scholarships for PhD Study


The Graduate School of Humanities and Social Sciences is offering top-up scholarships to the Australian Postgraduate Award (APA) for selected outstanding PhD applicants who have a degree from an interstate or a New Zealand university and who intend to commence their PhD studies in 2012.

The top-up will increase the total of the APA award to approximately $30,000 annually.

Applicants who apply for a PhD with an APA for 2012 will automatically be considered for the top-up. There is no additional application process.

Applications for the PhD and APA close on 31st October 2011.

Benefits

The total package is valued at $30,060 per annum (2011 rate) and comprises:

  • The Arts Top-Up scholarship of $7,500 per annum for the duration of  the APA  (maximum of 3.5 years)
  • An Australian Postgraduate Award (APA) that provides:
    • A stipend valued at $22,860 (2011 rate)
    • A thesis allowance of $840 for PhD and other doctorate by research candidates (2011 rates)
    • Paid sick, maternity and parenting leave
    • A relocation grant of $2,000 (2011 rate)

Eligibility Criteria and Application Procedure

To be considered for a Top-Up Scholarship you must:

  • Apply before 31st October 2011 to commence a PhD in the Faculty of Arts in 2012. For information on how to apply go to the faculty's Research Higher Degrees web page.
  • Apply for an APA by 31st October 2011.
  • Have completed tertiary studies that are at least equivalent to a four year Australian degree with a minimum result of first class honours.
  • Have strong first class results overall for your final two years of study.
  • In 2011 you must be enrolled and completing an Honours Degree or equivalent.


All applicants who complete the above steps and meet the eligibility criteria will automatically be considered for a Arts Top-up scholarship.


Closing Date

The closing date for the APA and Top-Up scholarships is 31st October 2011.


Application Outcome

Applicants should view the progress of their application for APA at the Graduate Research Scholarships application status web page. Selection timelines for these scholarships are also provided on the postgraduate scholarships website.

Letters will be sent to the recipients of Arts top-up scholarships by the Faculty of Arts as soon as the results of their APA application and application for entry into the PhD are known.
