Overview

The Master of Applied Linguistics offers rigorous theoretical and practical training and will provide graduates with a competitive advantage where clear, independent and creative thinking is valued. The Master of Applied Linguistics is a one-year program designed for graduate professionals working with language in a wide range of areas. The program will equip students with an understanding of key research issues in applied linguistics and the skills to make a substantial professional contribution to the field. The program can be a pathway to a PhD by Reasearch.

Program features

  • Excellence: Applied Linguistics at Melbourne is the top Applied Linguistics program in Australia. It was the only program in Applied Linguistics awarded a top rank of 5 ("well above world standard") in the official 2010 Excellence in Research Australia ranking.
  • Professors: Our academic staff rank among the best in Australia and the world. They edit prestigious international and national journals in Applied Linguistics and language testing, serve on national and international boards and committees, hold large research grants and publish prolifically. At the same time, they are passionate about passing on their knowledge to their students.
  • Specialisation: Students can choose one of four specializations: TESOL, Language Testing, English Language, and Technology and Language Learning. Each specialization provides a thorough grounding in Applied Linguistics and more in-depth study according to students' interests.
  • Flexibility: The program is fully available online and most subjects are taught in the afternoon to enable students to work during the day. Local students can combine online and on-campus study, and can study full-time or part-time. International students can choose one delivery mode, and can choose between full-time and part-time study if studying online from outside Australia.
  • Pathway to higher degrees: Students have the option of doing a Minor Thesis, which provides valuable experience doing independent research under the supervision of an experienced academic. Completing a Minor Thesis also opens up a pathway to PhD research for students wanting to continue to a higher degree.
