I enjoy the practical aspects of learning about objects, as well how the course content closely relates to the conservation industry.
From my perspective, the University of Melbourne resembles a hive that is buzzing with so much expertise and activity. No matter what you are trying to find out, there will be someone else who has knowledge on that topic, or can point you in the right direction. We are also very lucky to have access to the Grimwade Centre for Cultural Materials Conservation.
I've discovered there is so much important conservation happening outside of traditional museums and institutions. It's exciting to think of the places where projects might take place in the future because it's likely that some of these areas will be completely new to conservators.
During my studies I took on an Executive Committee Member role with the Art History Students Society (AHSS). I'm the Publications Director and I'm currently running an editorial team working hard to get an online journal up and running. I'm enjoying being a part of AHSS; it’s great to collaborate with a group of people who love art as much as I do.
I also joined the Australian Institute for the Conservation of Cultural Material (AICCM) as a student member as well as the Student Conservators at Melbourne (SCAM) now that I'm in grad school. With the degree I hope to acquire the skills and work experience opportunities to become an AICCM accredited conservator and find a suitable career opportunity.
